The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, ‘The only constant is change.’ We will experience many changes in life, and it is important that we put these changes in perspective and adapt to them.
A statement attributed to Charles Darwin summarises this universal change and offers a clue to thriving through our journey:
“In the struggle for survival. It is not the strongest of the species, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”.
The study of calculus, while seemingly complex, can assist us in understanding the picture of change and managing these changes in our lives. Calculus calculates motion and changes in an incremental manner, and from it, we can gain an understanding of how everything changes and how in any given situation, we have to manage our life choices.
A lot of life’s choices are hidden in figures. This important model in mathematics subtly describes a great deal of the changes we shall be experiencing in our lives. For the few who can combine the study of Mathematics, Science and Philosophy, Calculus aids their understanding of managing change in their lives. But for the majority of us, is it ‘rocket science’?
It doesn’t have to be. Change, which is inevitable, happens and results in either bliss or stress. But we want the bliss, not the stress, so how can we maximise the former and reduce the latter?
